When the big blind shows 8d-10d for a straight, poor Mr. Slow Play needs to hit a card on the river, or he’s out of the tournament.

This is the first reason not to use the slow play too much. The second reason is a subtle one. By slow playing you don’t maximize the hand as often. I’ll show you why.

You have 3c-3s on the button. You call a raise from an early position player. The flop of As-Jd-3h prompts a small continuation bet from your opponent. You just call, trying to disguise you great hand.

The turn card is the Qd. He now checks to you. You make a small raise, and he calls. The river is the 10d. Your opponent makes a small raise. The board is now very scary for you so you can only call. He shows Ac-Js, and you see the opportunity that you have missed with this slow play.

Had you made a strong re-raise on the flop, you probably will stack your opponent. You miss taking advantage of his second best type hand. If your re-raise gets him to fold, you probably won’t get more chips by calling, he didn’t have a good enough hand to keep him betting. Clearly slow playing here doesn’t get you the best results.

Slow playing has its place, like flopping a full house and letting your opponent draw for his flush or straight. But, in many cases you make less, and risk more by slow playing certain situations. Learning when to slow play, and when not to, will help you win more tournaments.
